Find the Aquamarine Piece That Fits Your Style

Aquamarine is a member of the beryl group, just like emerald. However, unlike its fellow gemstone, it has greater transparency and clarity, with high-quality stones being completely see-through with no cloudiness. There are some specimens with a slight icy blue hue, while others tend to have a bluish green color.

Aquamarine Stones

Loose stones, selected individually and ready to be set.

Rings

Solitaires, trilogies and cocktail settings in 9ct and 18ct gold.

Necklaces

Pendants and chains in lengths that layer without tangling.

Earrings

Studs and drops that brighten without weighing the lobe.

Aquamarine has a distinct appearance compared to other blue gemstones.

Aquamarine is used extensively in jewellery as it is quite durable for regular wear. This gemstone’s hardness rate falls between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs scale, which means it can be used for rings, earrings, necklaces, pendants, and bracelets.

Today, most aquamarine gems in jewellery are mined in Brazil, Madagascar, and Nigeria. The higher the clarity of an aquamarine stone and the stronger its color, the higher its value.

Find the Green Tourmaline Piece That Suits You

Green tourmaline is hard enough for daily wear and affordable at sizes where other green stones are not, so it suits generous designs that would be unrealistic in emerald or tsavorite.

Every piece is made in our Burnside workshop around a stone you have seen. Colour in tourmaline depends heavily on how the stone was cut, so it is always worth looking at two or three.

Our Ring Collection

Aquamarine Rings

Aquamarine rings have a fresh and light appearance and do not carry the weight that some other dark stones have.
While some customers choose a vintage style featuring engraving, a milgrain edge or even filigree, others opt for a simple, elegant design, one which puts the emphasis on the stone. Both designs will work well depending on the type of aquamarine used and its color.

Our Rings Collection

Green Tourmaline Rings

Green tourmaline is hard enough for a ring worn daily and cheap enough to be used generously, which is an unusual combination in a green stone. Most of what we make is a solitaire in a size that would be unaffordable in emerald or tsavorite.

Yellow gold warms the stone and suits the deeper forest greens. White metal keeps a lighter mint green crisp.

Our Earrings Collection

Green Tourmaline Earrings

Matching green tourmaline is more work than it looks, because colour depends on how each stone was oriented at the cutting wheel. We match for face-up colour rather than for grade on paper.

Our Pendants Collection

Green Tourmaline Pendants

A pendant is where a large green tourmaline makes sense — the size that would be heavy in a ring hangs comfortably, and the colour sits well against most skin tones.

The Facts Behind Aquamarine's Timeless Beauty

What every property actually means for the jewellery you wear every day

Property Value What It Means for You

Hardness (Mohs)

7.5–8
Very durable and suitable for everyday wear in rings, bracelets, and pendants

Transparency

Transparent
Light passes through the stone completely from one side to the other, which is what creates that luminous, glowing quality aquamarine is known for. The cleaner and more transparent the stone, the more light it holds and the more alive it looks when worn

Luster

Vitreous
The surface reflects light the way polished glass does, bright, clear, and sharp. This is what gives aquamarine that clean, refreshing appearance that catches the eye even in low light

The Facts Behind Green Tourmaline

What each property actually means for a piece you intend to wear

Property Value What it means for you
Hardness (Mohs) 7 – 7.5 Suitable for a ring worn daily. Harder than opal, quartz or tanzanite, and without the fractures that make emerald a specialist’s stone.
Transparency Transparent to translucent Cleaner stones carry more brightness; slightly included material is common in green tourmaline and is often what makes a larger stone affordable.
Pleochroism Noticeable The stone is usually darker down the length of the crystal than across it, which is why cutters orient green tourmaline carefully. A well-cut stone stays bright rather than going black at the centre.
Typical treatment Sometimes heated Heating is used to lighten over-dark material and is permanent. Much green tourmaline is untreated; we will tell you which you are looking at.
Available size Large sizes realistic Unlike tsavorite, green tourmaline reaches generous sizes without the price becoming unreasonable, which makes it a good choice for a statement piece.

Colour

Colour of Aquamarine Stones

There are various shades of blue for aquamarines. The colour ranges from light icy blue through to deep blue-green. We can show you the range in colour and assist you in selecting the right stone for your design.

Light Aquamarine Stone

Lighter aquamarine stones have a subtle icy hue and will suit everyday jewellery designs.

Medium Aquamarine Stone

This colour is a popular choice for aquamarines. Gemstones in this category will give off a bright, vivid, and bold blue colour.

Dark Aquamarine Stone

The darker aquamarine stones offer a rich blue-green hue with high visibility and are often used in statement pieces.

Colour

The Colour Range of Green Tourmaline

Green tourmaline runs from a light yellowish green through to a deep forest green, with the chrome-bearing material at the vivid end. Because the stone is pleochroic, cut matters as much as colour grade — ask to see a stone under both daylight and electric light.

Light Mint Green

Fresh and bright, with a yellowish cast. The most affordable end and the easiest to find in large, clean stones.

Forest Green

The commercial centre: a deeper, cooler green that holds its colour well under electric light.

Chrome Green

Coloured by chromium rather than iron, this is the vivid, emerald-like material. Scarcer and priced well above ordinary green tourmaline.

October Birthstone
Tourmaline

Green Tourmaline, an October Birthstone

Tourmaline is October’s second birthstone, and the more practical of the two: opal is soft and sensitive to temperature, while tourmaline is hard enough for a ring worn every day.

Green tourmaline is the most plentiful colour the species produces, which makes it one of the few genuinely hard green stones available in larger sizes at a sensible price. It is also the usual choice for anyone who wants green without emerald’s fractures or tsavorite’s size limits.

Questions We Are Asked Most Often

What is green tourmaline?

The green variety of elbaite tourmaline, sometimes sold under the older trade name verdelite. Tourmaline occurs in more colours than any other gem species, and green is the most plentiful of them.

Is green tourmaline suitable for an engagement ring?

Yes. At Mohs 7 to 7.5 it handles daily wear well, and it has no cleavage plane to chip along. It is a more practical green than emerald and reaches larger sizes than tsavorite.

What is chrome tourmaline?

Green tourmaline coloured by chromium or vanadium rather than iron. It is noticeably more vivid, closer to fine emerald in colour, and costs considerably more than ordinary green tourmaline.

Why do some green tourmalines look dark?

Tourmaline is pleochroic and usually darker along the length of the crystal. A stone cut to the wrong orientation reads dark or black at the centre. It is a cutting decision rather than a flaw in the material, and it is one of the first things we check.

Is green tourmaline treated?

Some is heated to lighten over-dark colour, which is permanent and standard. A good deal of it is untreated. We tell you what a stone has had done to it before you commit.

Questions We Are Asked Most Often

What is Aquamarine?

Aquamarine is actually a member of the beryl family which includes emerald and morganite. The blue-green color of aquamarine is due to small amounts of iron within its molecular structure, while the natural transparency of the stone creates exceptional sparkle and shine in the finished piece of jewelry. It’s a reliable gemstone that retains its beauty in every light.

Bezel setting will protect your aquamarine by encircling the edges of the stone from potential damage due to daily usage. A halo setting surrounds the center stone with additional diamonds or gemstones and provides added protection to the edges of the stone. Claw setting exposes more of the edges of the stone, however also provides the best visibility of its color.
