Engagement Rings

A ring the colour of the day you asked

Sapphire, ruby, emerald, spinel — hand-selected loose stones, set in Adelaide by the same bench that has made them for forty years. Every engagement ring here is made one at a time, for one person.

Why a coloured stone

Because no one else will have it

A diamond is a specification. A coloured stone is a decision — about a colour, a cut, a particular piece of the earth. It is the one part of the ring that can’t be repeated.

01

Genuinely one of one

Two sapphires of the same weight and grade are not the same sapphire. You choose the actual stone, in the hand, before anything is made.

02

More stone for the money

At the same budget a coloured gemstone is usually significantly larger and more distinctive than the diamond it sits beside.

03

It means something

Her birth month. The colour of the water where you asked. A stone that carried down the family. Colour lets a ring say something a clear stone can't.

04

Built to be worn daily

We only put stones into engagement rings that can take a lifetime of wear — and we'll tell you plainly when a stone you love can't.

The collection

Ready now, or made for you
These are finished pieces you can see and try on in Burnside this week. Any of them can also be remade around a different stone, in a different metal, to your size.

Our Collection

What happens if you have one made

Six to eight weeks, start to finish. Nothing is charged until you’ve seen the design and said yes to it.

  1. Day one

We talk, with no ring in the room

Budget, her hands, what she already wears, whether she wants to know or be surprised. Half an hour, in the Burnside workshop or over the phone.

  2. Week one

    You choose the stone

We bring out loose stones inside your budget — usually three or four to compare in daylight. You will see the differences between them immediately. Nothing is committed at this point.

  3. Week two

    Design and quote

Hand sketches or a CAD render, depending on the piece, with a fixed price. Changes at this stage cost nothing. We only take a deposit once you approve it.

  4. Weeks 3–7

    Made at the bench

Cast or hand-fabricated, set and finished in Adelaide. We'll send you a photograph at the setting stage so there are no surprises.

  5. Handover

    Fitted, valued and boxed

Final fitting, an independent valuation for your insurer, and the ring in a box that won't give it away in a coat pocket.

Solitaire

All stone, nothing competing. Best for a stone you want people to notice.

Halo

A ring of small diamonds. Makes the centre stone read larger and protects the girdle.

Trilogy

Three stones — past, present, future. Also the easiest way to use a smaller centre stone well.

Bezel

Metal all the way around the edge. The most protective setting we make, and the one we recommend for anything under Mohs 7.5.

Cluster

Several stones read as one. Vintage in feel, and very forgiving of an unusual stone shape.

Where they're made

Diamond Design Studios, our workshop in Adelaide

Every ring on this page is made by our sister company, Diamond Design Studios — the same bench, the same jewellers, a few metres from where the stones are kept. DDS was named Best Ring Manufacturer in Adelaide in 2017 and 2019, and took an Australian Bridal Industry Academy award in 2016.

It means nothing leaves the state to be made, and if something ever needs attention, it comes back to the people who made it.
