Find the Aquamarine Piece That Fits Your Style

Aquamarine is a member of the beryl group, just like emerald. However, unlike its fellow gemstone, it has greater transparency and clarity, with high-quality stones being completely see-through with no cloudiness. There are some specimens with a slight icy blue hue, while others tend to have a bluish green color.

Aquamarine Stones

Loose stones, selected individually and ready to be set.

Rings

Solitaires, trilogies and cocktail settings in 9ct and 18ct gold.

Necklaces

Pendants and chains in lengths that layer without tangling.

Earrings

Studs and drops that brighten without weighing the lobe.

Aquamarine has a distinct appearance compared to other blue gemstones.

Aquamarine is used extensively in jewellery as it is quite durable for regular wear. This gemstone’s hardness rate falls between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs scale, which means it can be used for rings, earrings, necklaces, pendants, and bracelets.

Today, most aquamarine gems in jewellery are mined in Brazil, Madagascar, and Nigeria. The higher the clarity of an aquamarine stone and the stronger its color, the higher its value.

Find the Pink Sapphire Piece That Suits You

Pink sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as blue sapphire and ruby, and it carries the same Mohs 9 hardness. That means the choice between a ring, earrings and a pendant is a question of what you want to wear, not of what the stone can survive.

Every piece is made in our Burnside workshop around a stone you have seen. If nothing here is quite right, we will source the stone and design the setting from scratch.

Our Ring Collection

Aquamarine Rings

Aquamarine rings have a fresh and light appearance and do not carry the weight that some other dark stones have.
While some customers choose a vintage style featuring engraving, a milgrain edge or even filigree, others opt for a simple, elegant design, one which puts the emphasis on the stone. Both designs will work well depending on the type of aquamarine used and its color.

Our Rings Collection

Pink Sapphire Rings

Pink sapphire is one of the few coloured stones we will set in a plain claw setting without hesitation. At Mohs 9 it does not need protecting, so the design can be about the stone rather than around it.

Most of what we make is either a solitaire that lets the colour carry the ring, or a trilogy with diamonds either side, which lifts a lighter pink considerably. Rose gold warms the stone; white gold and platinum cool it and make it read pinker.

Our Earrings Collection

Pink Sapphire Earrings

Pink sapphire studs are the easiest entry point: hard enough to be worn and slept in, small enough to be worn with anything. Matching a pair takes longer than finding a single stone, so tell us early if a specific shade matters.

Our Pendants Collection

Pink Sapphire Pendants

A pendant is where a lighter pink sapphire is best used — against skin rather than metal, a pale stone reads clearly where in a ring it can look washed out.

The Detail

The Facts Behind Aquamarine's Timeless Beauty

What every property actually means for the jewellery you wear every day

Property Value What It Means for You

Hardness (Mohs)

7.5–8
Very durable and suitable for everyday wear in rings, bracelets, and pendants

Transparency

Transparent
Light passes through the stone completely from one side to the other, which is what creates that luminous, glowing quality aquamarine is known for. The cleaner and more transparent the stone, the more light it holds and the more alive it looks when worn

Luster

Vitreous
The surface reflects light the way polished glass does, bright, clear, and sharp. This is what gives aquamarine that clean, refreshing appearance that catches the eye even in low light

The Facts Behind Pink Sapphire

What each property actually means for a piece you intend to wear

Property Value What it means for you
Hardness (Mohs) 9 Second only to diamond. Nothing encountered in ordinary wear will scratch it, so it holds a polish for decades in a ring worn every day.
Transparency Transparent Light passes straight through, so the colour reads the same across the stone rather than pooling in patches. Cleaner stones look brighter in low light.
Lustre Vitreous A hard, glassy surface reflection. It is what keeps a sapphire looking sharp years after softer stones have dulled at the facet edges.
Cleavage None No internal plane for a knock to split along. This is the practical reason sapphire outperforms stones of similar hardness in rings.
Typical treatment Heat Most pink sapphire on the market is heated to improve colour. It is stable, permanent and standard trade practice. We tell you what a stone has had done to it.

Colour

Colour of Aquamarine Stones

There are various shades of blue for aquamarines. The colour ranges from light icy blue through to deep blue-green. We can show you the range in colour and assist you in selecting the right stone for your design.

Light Aquamarine Stone

Lighter aquamarine stones have a subtle icy hue and will suit everyday jewellery designs.

Medium Aquamarine Stone

This colour is a popular choice for aquamarines. Gemstones in this category will give off a bright, vivid, and bold blue colour.

Dark Aquamarine Stone

The darker aquamarine stones offer a rich blue-green hue with high visibility and are often used in statement pieces.

Colour

The Colour Range of Pink Sapphire

Pink sapphire runs from a pale blush to a saturated raspberry, with purplish and orange-leaning stones in between. Colour carries most of the price. We can show you the range side by side in daylight and help you settle on one before any design work starts.

Pale Blush Pink

Soft and light, closer to a rose tint than a true pink. The most affordable end of the range and the easiest to wear every day.

Vivid Pink

The commercial centre of the range: a clear, strong pink that holds its colour under electric light as well as daylight.

Purplish Pink

A cooler stone leaning towards violet. Often less expensive than an equally strong pure pink, and it suits white metal particularly well.

September Birthstone

Pink Sapphire, an Alternate Birthstone for September

September belongs to sapphire, and sapphire is not only blue. Pink sapphire is the same mineral — corundum — coloured by traces of chromium rather than iron and titanium. It carries the same Mohs 9 hardness, the same resistance to scratching and the same absence of a cleavage plane, which is what makes sapphire the most practical coloured stone for jewellery worn constantly.

For a September birthday it is a straightforward alternative to blue, and it is usually less expensive than blue sapphire of comparable quality. The colour runs from pale blush through to a strong raspberry, and the stronger colours in larger sizes are where the price climbs.

Questions We Are Asked Most Often

Is pink sapphire a real sapphire?

Yes. Sapphire is the mineral corundum in any colour except red, which is called ruby. Pink sapphire is the same species, the same hardness and the same durability as blue sapphire; only the trace element colouring it differs.

Is pink sapphire hard enough for an engagement ring?

Yes. At Mohs 9 with no cleavage plane, it is one of the two or three most practical coloured stones for a ring worn every day. No special setting is required, though a bezel or low claws will keep any ring looking better for longer.

How does pink sapphire compare with pink diamond on price?

There is no comparison in price. Natural pink diamond is among the most expensive gem materials in the world. A fine pink sapphire of good size is a realistic purchase, which is why it is the usual choice when the colour matters more than the species.

Is pink sapphire treated?

Most of it is heated, which is permanent and standard across the sapphire trade. Unheated stones exist and cost more. We tell you which you are looking at before you commit to a design.

Can you match a pair of pink sapphires for earrings?

Yes, though matching takes longer than finding a single stone. Tell us the size and the shade you want and we will source a matched pair rather than setting two stones that nearly agree.

Questions We Are Asked Most Often

What is Aquamarine?

Aquamarine is actually a member of the beryl family which includes emerald and morganite. The blue-green color of aquamarine is due to small amounts of iron within its molecular structure, while the natural transparency of the stone creates exceptional sparkle and shine in the finished piece of jewelry. It’s a reliable gemstone that retains its beauty in every light.

Bezel setting will protect your aquamarine by encircling the edges of the stone from potential damage due to daily usage. A halo setting surrounds the center stone with additional diamonds or gemstones and provides added protection to the edges of the stone. Claw setting exposes more of the edges of the stone, however also provides the best visibility of its color.
